3rd-4th grade writing classes at The Writing School LA.

Class Description

In our Grades 3-4 writing class, students will explore the fundamentals of reading and writing through engaging activities that emphasize creativity and critical thinking. The curriculum focuses on developing essential skills such as understanding story structure, identifying main ideas, and expressing thoughts through writing. Students will read culturally responsive literature, participate in discussions, and complete writing projects that reflect their unique voices.

Topic: Exploring Character Development through Charlotte's Web

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Activities:
    • 10 min: Introduction to the day's lesson, discussing character traits and motivations.
    • 20 min: Read a selected chapter from Charlotte's Web focusing on Wilbur and Charlotte's friendship.
    • 15 min: Group discussion on character traits, using a character map to analyze Wilbur and Charlotte.
    • 40 min: Writing activity where students create a short story featuring an original character who has a special friendship.
    • 10 min: Sharing stories in small groups.

Visiting a farm as a part of The Writing School LA reading and writing classes.

As part of our literacy enrichment program, students will embark on an exciting field trip to a local farm. This hands-on experience will connect the themes of nature, friendship, and responsibility found in Charlotte's Web. 


During the visit, students will have the opportunity to engage with various farm animals, participate in interactive workshops about agriculture, and learn about the importance of farming in our community. 


This trip not only enhances their understanding of the literary themes but also provides real-world connections to the concepts they are studying in class. Students will return with a deeper appreciation for nature and a renewed enthusiasm for reading and writing.
